Baftas 2024: Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ suffers major disappointment

The epic American odyssey Killers of the Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese, has been snubbed at the Bafta Awards, winning none of its nine nominations.

Despite being given the nod for such categories as ‘Best Film’, ‘Best Casting’ and ‘Best Cinematography’, the movie consistently lost out to the likes of Oppenheimer, The Holdovers and more. Veteran actor Robert De Niro also failed to secure a win, losing out to Robert Downey Jr in the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ category, who claimed the prize for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Still, the cast and crew behind Killers of the Flower Moon won’t have to lick their wounds for long, with the Oscars nominating the film for ten categories, including ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’.

Speaking about the film in Far Out’s four-and-a-half star review, we stated: “Faith has always played an essential part in most of Scorsese’s movies, and he uses it well in Killers of the Flower Moon. One might expect an overreliance on Native American ritual and belief, but the director refrains from overdoing it; when hallucinations and visions of the beyond are depicted, they are tasteful”.

Continuing, the review noted: “There’s a terrific score of delicious basslines, harmonica solos and slide guitar with a soundtrack of period music also lending an air of realistic authority to proceedings along the way. As expected of Scorsese, every shot is perfectly crafted and brings the nature of the true-crime narrative to new cinematic heights”.

Scorsese didn’t get much luck the last time he appeared at the Baftas either, with 2020’s The Irishman securing no wins from its ten nominations.
