Aubrey Plaza to star in John Waters’ first movie in 20 years

Director John Waters is set to return to filmmaking for the first time in 20 years and The White Lotus actor Aubrey Plaza set to star in his new project.

His last on-screen adventure was A Dirty Shame in 2004, starring Tracey Ullman and Johnny Knoxville. Since then, Waters has expanded his wings creatively and released his debut novel, Liarmouth, in 2022, which he is now set to turn into a motion picture.

Filming for the upcoming adaption is set to start later this year in Waters’ home city Baltimore, Maryland, according to World of Reel. The location has often been used as the backdrop for the director’s productions.

Shortly after releasing the novel in 2022, Village Roadshow Pictures optioned the book and began plotting the film. Following the announcement, Waters said: “Liarmouth is the craziest thing I’ve written in a while, so maybe it’s fitting that my novel was shocking enough to jumpstart the engine of my film career. Thrilled to be back in the movie business, hopefully to spread demented joy to adventuresome moviegoers around the world.”

Furthermore during an interview with the Academy, Waters commented: “The response [to Liarmouth] has been very good so far, and believe me it could have gone either way. Once you read it, you’ll know what I mean. If you like some of my crazier films, you will not be disappointed!”

Plaza has previously publicly declared her wishes to star in the adaptation of Liarmouth. While speaking with Dazed in 2022, the explained how she contacted Waters to secure an audition after hearing news it was in the works.

She remarked: “I emailed him immediately and said, ‘You better let me audition for you. I even look like the girl on the cover’ of the book. I’m throwing myself at his feet. I’ll do anything to get the part. I mean anything.”

As of yet, no further details on casting has been revealed and there isn’t a confirmed release date for Liarmouth.
