At The Gates singer Tomas Lindberg dead at 52

Tomas Lindberg, the frontman of the Swedish death metal band At The Gates, has died at the age of 52.

After being diagnosed in December 2023 with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare type of slow growing head and neck cancer of the salivary glands, Lindberg had undergone various treatments to combat the disease.

However, sadly, his passing was confirmed by his family on September 16th to the Swedish broadcaster SVT Nyheter, after doctors had discovered traces of the cancer earlier this year, even after surgery to remove a large portion of the roof of his mouth.

Lindberg had also suffered an unspecified health setback earlier this year in May, at which point his condition began to significantly deteriorate.

The band revealed that the frontman had been suffering from the disease in a statement released in August, where they confirmed that a new album had been recorded shortly before Lindberg’s diagnosis.

The singer himself said in the statement at the time: “We have now decided to not wait any longer to release this new album. We had first planned to wait with the release until we knew if/when I would be able to sing again, and we were able to support the release with shows. Now when everything about the future is a bit more unsure it feels good to deliver this album.”

However, especially in light of Lindberg’s passing, no further details on the name or release date of the album have yet been revealed.

At The Gates formed as a death metal band from Gothenburg back in 1990, with their 1995 album Slaughter to the Soul being hailed as a landmark piece in the history of Swedish rock music. Their most recent album, prior to the one recorded before Lindberg’s illness, was titled The Nightmare of Being and released in 2021.
