Asia Argento pulls of out of music festival curation due to sexual assault allegation
Asia Argento has withdrawn from her pre-planned curation of music festival ‘Le Guess Who?’ amid a serious sexual assault allegation made against her.
The actress and filmmaker, who has been leading the charge against disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, has been accused of paying off child actor Jimmy Bennet after allegedly sexually assaulting the actor when he was just 17.
Despite being one of the first actors to speak out about the monster Harvey Weinstein after she alleged he raped her in 1997 (something Weinstein still denies), Asia Argento has herself been accused of sexual misconduct after it has been brought to light that she paid former-child actor Bennet $380,000.
Bennett has made the claims that in May 2013 he met Argento at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Marina Del Rey, California where she allegedly gave him alcohol and had sex with him. At the time, he had only just turned 17, while Argento was 37, the age of consent in California is 18.
Now, amid the controversy, Argento has decided against going ahead with her co-curation of Le Guess Who? festival. “Due to the volatile nature of the accusations surrounding Ms. Argento, she has chosen to withdraw from her curatorship of this year’s edition,” the festival said in a new statement.
“While these issues remain open. Le Guess Who? supports her decision, as we consider it our responsibility to represent, to the best of our ability, the interests and integrity of all artists involved with our organization, and we strive to do this with sensitivity and respect,” the event added.
“Le Guess Who? still supports all curated artists and their artistic output, and intends to keep all these artists involved within the general program for the 2018 edition.”
Le Guess Who? will take place November 8-10 in the Dutch city of Utrecht.
