As a child, Anne Hathaway was warned that her career would “fall off a cliff at the age of 35”
After making her feature film debut with The Princess Diaries in 2001, Anne Hathaway has remained a consistent presence on our screens ever since, disproving an early warning that her career would go into decline once she hit 35 years old.
Discussing the age limitations set on women in the acting industry, Hathaway recalled a warning she received in her youth. “When I started out [in this industry] as a child,” she revealed in a new interview, “I was warned that my career would fall off a cliff at the age of 35, which is something I know a lot of women face.”
With a career still going strong at 41, Hathaway has defied this claim, as have so many other women, though there is still more work to be done. “The thing that has evolved during [that time] is that more women are having careers deeper into their lives, which I think is fantastic,” she continued to Porter Magazine, “Obviously, it doesn’t mean we should have a ticker tape parade.”
The actor concluded with the words, “Someone said this to me the other day: ‘There’s so much to be proud of and there’s so much to fix.'”
Hathaway certainly has lots to be proud of regarding her career. Since turning 35, she has starred in The Hustle opposite Rebel Wilson, heist sequel Ocean’s 8 and legal drama Dark Waters, continually proving her place in the industry. Most recently, she starred alongside Peter Dinklage in the rom-com She Came to Me.
The actor is also set to appear in Eileen, an adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel of the same name, scheduled for release on December 1st in the United States.
