Ari Aster’s ‘Midsommar’ director’s cut to be released on IMAX for the summer solstice
Ari Aster’s coveted horror epic Midsommar will be released on IMAX in theatres across the United States for one day, June 20th, to celebrate the summer solstice.
More than 300 IMAX locations across the country will show the director’s cut of the movie, which stars Florence Pugh as Dani, a young woman who travels to Sweden with her boyfriend, played by Jack Reynor, to explore the country’s native midsummer celebrations during the summer solstice.
Of course, their quaint retreat soon turns complicated, as what they thought would be an educational, cultural trip turns out to be a more harrowing and insidious Pagan ritual with its eyes firmly set on the group.
Despite the plans to bring the director’s cut of Midsommar to the big screen once again, it is far from the first A24 movie to do so, with Ex Machina and Uncut Gems also joining the growing list. Upcoming movies set for release also include Oasis: Supersonic and Everything Everywhere All At Once, per IMDb.
Upon release, Midsommar enjoyed significant critical acclaim on account of its directing, writing, and performances. Pugh, in particular, caught the audience’s attention due to her raw and nuanced acting, despite her admitting after the movie’s release that she struggled to cry on camera while filming.
Aster’s directing was also praised, especially for maintaining the movie’s terrifying edge despite the entire narrative playing out in broad daylight—a far cry from many traditional and contemporary horror and thriller movies, which typically rely on darkness and dark hues to incite fear.
The IMAX release is almost certain to generate a resurgence of the movie’s popularity, especially considering its notable timing with the Swedish midsummer celebrations, which also fall on June 20th this year.
As a somewhat modern cult classic and elevated horror, Midsommer will no-doubt delight with its timeless blend of stunning directorial spectacle and violent depictions of broken relationships and cultural rituals.
