Ari Aster lands Scarlett Johansson to star in his new movie, ‘Scapegoat’
Scarlett Johansson is set to star in Ari Aster’s next movie, Scapegoat. The movie will be released by A24, as per Aster’s last four movies.
As is the case in the Aster multiverse, plot details for the forthcoming project are being kept firmly under lock and key. As well as teaming up with A24 as the distributor, Aster will collaborate with Lars Knudsen, who is producing for his Square Peg label.
As per Deadline, Aster spent the end of last year writing Scapegoat; sources suggest that Johansson was all-in after reading the script, despite her busy schedule for the rest of the year, which includes shooting the next Batman sequel opposite Robert Pattinson.
Like with Aster’s previous movies, such as Hereditary and Eddington, viewers can expect that the movie has dark undertones.
This is in keeping with Johansson’s latest project; the Lost in Translation star has just finished production on The Exorcist at Universal. Director Mike Flanagan of The Haunting of Hill House will provide a new take on the beloved possession story with Johansson at the helm.
Aster’s last project, Eddington was released a year ago; an all-star cast supported the lengthy satire, such as Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, and Pedro Pascal. However, the project earnt $14 million against a $25 million budget amid mixed reviews.
In comparison, Johansson enjoyed great success at the box office, bolstering the Jurassic World franchise with Jurassic World: Rebirth, which went on to gross $868M worldwide and has a sequel in the works.
Johnasson also recently made her directorial debut with the drama Eleanor the Great, which enjoyed a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. She will next hit the big screen opposite Miles Teller and Adam Driver in the James Gray movie Paper Tiger.
