‘Anyone but You’ becomes the highest-grossing live-action Shakespeare adaptation ever
The romantic comedy Anyone but You, starring Glenn Powell and Sydney Sweeney, has become the highest-grossing live adaption of work by William Shakespeare.
The movie, which sees Powell and Sweeney locked in a complicated love affair, is loosely inspired by Much Ado About Nothing. However, the similarities between the two pieces of work may have gone completely over the heads of the many audience members who’ve helped the film to new commercial heights.
Will Gluck’s box office hit stars the aforementioned pair as Ben and Bea, who end up at the same wedding in Australia months after their initial meeting, where they try to keep up appearances by maintaining the illusion of being the perfect couple.
Going from lovers to enemies to friends to lovers once more, Anyone but You has ticked all the right boxes for rom-com lovers, drumming up so much repeat business that it’s now earned more money from cinemas than any other Shakespeare-derived film ever made.
The movie’s running total is sitting around the $190million mark, putting it ahead of Baz Luhrmann’s lavish Romeo + Juliet, which conspired to bring in $147million back in 1996.
Impressively, more than nine weeks after its release, Anyone but You remains one of the ten biggest hits at the domestic box office in the United States.
The names of Powell and Sweeney’s characters being derived from their Shakespearean counterparts Benedick and Beatrice. Additionally, there are a smattering of quotes pulled directly from the source material and dropped into the screenplay, even if Anyone but You doesn’t quite wear its influences on the sleeve for all to see.
