Antony Price, fashion designer for David Bowie and Roxy Music, dead at 80
Antony Price, a legendary British fashion designer for music stars including David Bowie, has died aged 80.
Price was born in West Yorkshire in 1946 and began his career in the late 1960s working for the London designer, Stirling Cooper, quickly becoming of service to stars in the music industry, such as The Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger for the band’s 1969 tour.
He worked closely with Roxy Music, styling the band for their first eight albums, which established their signature look. Other musical stars that he collaborated with include Duran Duran, Lou Reed, and the jacket that Bowie wore in his iconic video for ‘As The World Falls Down’.
Outside of his music, Price assisted Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, during the 1990s after she became part of the Royal Family.
His final show took place in London last month in collaboration with fashion brand 16Arlington, and saw Lily Allen walk the red carpet for the first time, modelling an outfit inspired by Princess Diana’s famous ‘revenge dress’.
Tributes have been led by Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes, who wrote on the band’s website, “I am deeply saddened to hear that my very dear friend Antony Price, passed away yesterday. He was a visionary fashion designer, with extraordinary technical skills. Nobody did glam better than Antony…”
Rhodes also noted, “For Duran Duran, he was an important collaborator from the very beginning and we continued to work with him throughout the years. Perhaps most significantly, he conceived and designed all of the pastel coloured silk suits we wore in the Rio video.”
The keyboardist emotionally concluded, “He never failed to deliver. His swan song fashion show, just a few weeks ago was as spectacular and relevant as the first one I ever saw. More than all of this, Antony was a loyal, kind, intelligent and razor-witted, friend. I’ll miss you Tone…”
No cause of death has been confirmed.
