Antonio Banderas refutes claims of financial issues: “I’m not ruined—I’m at full throttle”

Spanish actor Antonio Banderas has shut down reports of financial issues linked to his theatre in Malaga.

Banderas issued a public statement on May 18th, following reports in his native country about his theatre, the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank.

It was claimed in the Spanish publication El Periodico that it had incurred annual losses of €2.5million, which has caused Banderas to respond to the reports and explain that the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank was never set out to make money.

Taking to X, Banderas shared with his followers, “It pains me to have to give, once again, explanations that I’ve repeated, over and over, about my goals in my theatrical projects.”

Acknowledging the reports, Banderas said, “The ruin of which I’m made a victim in certain media doesn’t exist. I feel sorry for those who might find some pleasure in it being so.”

He then reiterated his aims for the project, which had been a lifelong ambition for the actor and finally opened its doors in 2017, “The Teatro del Soho CaixaBank project is one where I set just one goal for myself: to do things as I believe they should be done and strive for excellence in our productions, beyond the economic deficits they may bring—and which, thank God, I can assume without any problem.”

Banderas then said this is a “pact” that he’s made with not only the theatre, but also the city of Malaga and himself.

The Academy Award nominee then suggested making money from the theatre would be “very easy”, but he has chosen to “create big productions, where I’ve given work to hundreds of people”, which he has pledged to keep doing.

The Spanish star then explained how the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank is financed, explaining it’s “a private nonprofit company that operates more like a public theater”, adding, “That means the project doesn’t receive public funding subsidies and won’t as long as I’m alive. I cover the expenses from undertaking hugely expensive projects that you’ll hardly see in companies that have to present financial results.”

Despite reports of financial problems, Banderas maintains the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank is flying high, sharing his pride at how they have been able “to break molds in these years and we’re going to keep doing it”.

He concluded the lengthy post, “No, my friends, I’m not ruined—I’m at full throttle! And I’m threateningly happy! Hasta la vista babies.”

While the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank may not be a money-making exercise, Banderas remains busy in Hollywood, allowing him to keep footing the bill. Upcoming projects include a key role in the upcoming A24 biopic on Anthony Bourdain, Tony, as well as starring in Rose’s Baby.
