‘Anora’ wins trio of major awards at Independent Spirit Awards

With Oscar buzz already abounding, Anora claimed a trio of major prizes at the Independent Spirit Awards. The ceremony is often seen as one of the most indicative preliminaries ahead of the Oscars in March.

The ceremony looks to honour the best in independent film and television over the last 12 months. On the night, Sean Baker’s movie was the big winner. It has been celebrated as not only a hugely enjoyable romp but a film that boldly delves into the often taboo topic of sex work.

On the night, Anora claimed ‘Best Feature’, while Baker claimed ‘Best Director’, and the movie’s lead star, 25-year-old Mikey Madison, claimed the award for ‘Best Lead Performance’. This assortment of big prizes made it the most celebrated movie of the night.

In his speech, Baker highlighted the importance of independent art. He said that the industry is “struggling more than ever”, beset by financial difficulties. But he also offered an alternative. “The system has to be changed,” he said. “It’s completely unsustainable. We shouldn’t be barely getting by.”

While the industry’s issues are readily apparent, Anora proved that art can still thrive despite the inequitable circumstances. In a four-star review, Far Out wrote, “Baker has created a shattering odyssey of love in a modern world, a film that feels more urgent than his others in the way he chooses to end it, exposing a society that has been corrupted by materialism and our misogynistic dating standards.”

Continuing: “There is no dream sequence or faint optimism, just a woman who has been punished for being briefly hopeful for a fairy-tale ending, longing for stability and a human love story in a heartless world.”

It wasn’t the only major winner on the night, A Real Pain also won a pair of prizes. You can check out all the major categories below.
