Andrew Scott says he “wasn’t that good” in James Bond movie ‘Spectre’

Thanks to roles such as the cunning Moriarty in BBC’s Sherlock and in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag, Andrew Scott has gained a strong reputation. However, the actor wasn’t happy with his performance in Sam Mendes’ second James Bond film, Spectre.

Released in 2015, the film saw Daniel Craig return as 007, supported by Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux and Ralph Fiennes. Scott took on the role of C, also known as Max Denbigh, an undercover member of the terrorist organisation Spectre.

Despite the iconic status of the series, Scott suggested that he wouldn’t take a similar role again. In a conversation with British GQ, he admitted: “If I’m honest, it’s not a territory that I feel like I would want to go over again. Now I know who I am a little bit more, I feel like the work that I’m just interested in doing is more in the grey areas.”

Scott also seemed to doubt his own performance in the film, concluding, “I suppose it’s just that I didn’t think… I just maybe wasn’t that good in it.”

Though he may not have returned to the James Bond franchise, since his role in Spectre, Scott reunited with Mendes in 2019 for the war drama 1917, which earned ten Academy Award nominations.

Now, he stars opposite Paul Mescal in Andrew Haugh’s All of Us Strangers. In a four-and-a-half star review of the ghostly romance, Far Out wrote: “Haigh once again fuses a beautiful on-screen romance that flourishes thanks to remarkable turns from Mescal and Scott.”

The review continued: “Such quiet, delicate characters are not easy to bring to vibrant cinematic life, yet Mescal, Scott, and supporting stars Claire Foy and Jamie Bell, as the ghostly mother and father, pull off the remarkable feat.”
