Andrew Garfield says Spider-Man return would have to be “very strange”
Andrew Garfield has shared his desire to reprise his role as Spider-Man in the upcoming fourth film, following on from his role in the 2012 film The Amazing Spider-Man, the 2014 Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the most recent instalment in 2021, Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the recent iteration of the story, which sees Tobey Maguire joining forces with Tom Holland and Garfield, garnered $1.9billion at the global box office.
However, at the recent Middle East Film and Comic Con, Garfield revealed that his return to the Spider-Man universe would require an off-beat and out-of-the-box idea.
When discussing this, Garfield said, “It would have to be very weird. I would like to do something very strange. Something very unique, and offbeat and surprising, kind of like the creative freedom they have with the animated ‘Spider-Verse’ movies.”
In an interview with Esquire magazine last year, Garfield said he was “left dangling” after his Spider-Man role came to an abrupt end following the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which was cancelled after a disappointing run at the box office. Its poor performance led Sony to split the rights over the character with Disney for the superhero to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In 2017, Tom Holland became the third actor to reprise the role, with the success of No Way Home showing that there could perhaps still be a fruitful future for Garfield’s version of the character.
Garfield explained, “For sure, I would 100% come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into. I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”
The actor recently stated that he had not signed on to be a part of the upcoming Spider-Man film, however, many fans are skeptical about this statement given that he said the same thing before starring in the last film.
