Andrew Garfield and Miles Teller to star in Martin Scorsese’s ‘Life of Jesus’ adaptation

The award-winning Hollywood actors Miles Teller and Andrew Garfield are both being tipped to star in Martin Scorsese’s forthcoming movie epic, a retelling of the story of Jesus Christ.

As reported by Variety, Scorsese’s new movie will be an independently funded adaptation of Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 book Life of Jesus. A long-term passion project for Scorsese, the celebrated Oscar-winner previously helmed The Last Temptation of Christ in 1988, a film starring Willem Dafoe in the challenging lead role that humanised the religious figure from life to death.

The forthcoming project bears resemblance to his 2016 drama Silence, which also starred Andrew Garfield and was, too, adapted from another Endō novel of the same name as the film. Also a film that focused on a religious narrative, Silence told the story of two Portuguese Jesuit priests in the 17th century who travelled to Japan in attempts to promote Catholicism.

Only rumoured to be taking part in Scorsese’s new project, it is unknown as of yet what roles Teller and Garfield are being eyed up for. Further details will likely emerge later this year when Scorsese commences production in Israel, Italy and Egypt.

Scorsese is just one of many iconic auteurs who remains active in the movie industry, with his peers, who also thrived in the late 20th century, including Francis Ford Coppola, Ridley Scott and Clint Eastwood also releasing movies in 2024. Also a totally self-funded project, all eyes are on Coppola’s Megalopolis which has yet to be picked up for global distribution partly thanks to its eccentric nature.

Killers of the Flower Moon is Scorsese’s latest project, with the 2023 film about the brutal murder of the Osage people failing to claim any Academy Awards despite being nominated for ten awards.
