Amy Poehler to direct new Netflix punk Riot Grrrl film ‘Moxie’
Amy Poehler’s upcoming film Moxie follows a teenage girl who stumbles upon the Riot Grrrl movement and uses its DIY feminist spirit to shake up her high school. What starts as a quiet rebellion quickly turns into a full-blown call to arms, flipping the script on the status quo.
Based on Jennifer Mathieu’s novel, Poehler’s banner Paper Kite acquired the rights last year, with Tamara Chestna adapting the screenplay. The film follows a 16-year-old girl inspired by her mother’s past in the underground Riot Grrrl punk movement, using it as the spark to ignite a feminist revolution at her high school.
The synopsis reads: “Inspired by a confident new friend and her mother’s rebellious past, a shy teenager publishes an anonymous zine calling out sexism at her school.”
“Moxie is kick-ass,” Poehler said about the book. “It’s a sweet, funny, and fierce exploration of how a few young women band together and start a movement,” she continued before adding, “Read this and then join the fight.”
Poehler’s film will be her second for Netflix following Wine Country, which is set to debut in May.
