Amazon MGM confirm “fresh” and “exotic” new James Bond movie is “getting started”

After a flurry of news surrounding its recent acquisition of the James Bond franchise, Amazon MGM has announced that plans are well underway for a new instalment in the series.

In February, the studio gained complete control over the franchise after lengthy negotiations with the previous owners, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, whose family owned the rights ever since their father, Albert R Broccoli, brought the first movie to the screen in 1962.

Late last month, Amazon MGM announced that it had brought veteran producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman in to take the place of Broccoli and Wilson. Pascal has an extensive track record with both big box office successes and critically acclaimed films, having ushered the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies to the screen and earned Oscar nominations for Steven Spielberg’s The Post and Greta Gerwig’s Little Women.

Heyman has an equally stellar track record, having produced all eight Harry Potter movies as well as Wonka and Barbie. He brings an additional credential to the table: being British, he helps appease those who might fear the direction of the most famous British secret agent under all American leadership.

Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas earlier this week, Amazon MGM executives Courtenay Valenti and Sue Kroll provided an update on the status of the Bond franchise, saying (via Variety), “We are committed to honouring the legacy of this iconic character while bringing a fresh, exotic new chapter to audiences around the world alongside Amy and David.”

Kroll added: “They’re both in London getting started and couldn’t be here tonight, but we wanted to thank them for what we know to make an incredible partnership.”

While there has been no update on who might play the next Bond, this statement clearly shows that Amazon is planning to jump on its newest acquisition as quickly as possible to prove that it can take it in the right direction.
