Alex Turner and Julian Casablancas hanging out after The Strokes gig in Paris
We have an image is good enough to make your indie heart skip a beat as Alex Turner and Julian Casablancas are spotted hanging out together in Paris.
Casablancas, who had just performed a headline set at Lollapalooza Paris 2019, seemingly invited Arctic Monkeys frontman Turner backstage for the after-party and one overzealous fan managed to capture the moment.
Turner has made no of his admiration for The Strokes over the years and, in 2011, told NME: “I remember I used to play that first album [Is This It] in college all the time when our band was first starting. Loads of people were into them, so loads of bands coming out sounded like them. I remember consciously trying not to sound like The Strokes, deliberately taking bits out of songs that sounded too much like them, but I still loved that album.”
After covering the New Yorkers a number of times in recent years, Turner returned with Arctic Monkeys last year with the release of their album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino—a record which featured a reference to The Strokes in its very first line. Turner croons: “I just wanted to be one of the Strokes, now look at the mess you made me make/Hitchhiking with a monogrammed suitcase, miles away from any half-useful imaginary highway,” in the opener of ‘Star Treatment’.
“That’s me writing about writing,” Turner would later explain in an interview with Mojo. “Did the Strokes line feel too close to home? Yeah, absolutely. But you can’t let that stop you.”
Well, he might not be joining the band but he’s certainly hanging out with them for beers in Paris.
