Alejandro González Iñárritu’s new Tom Cruise movie delayed after John Goodman suffers injury

John Goodman has been struck by an injury amid filming for an upcoming major movie being directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise, leading to production being halted temporarily.

The 72-year-old actor reportedly suffered a hip injury outside of filming. Warner Bros released a statement that said: “He received immediate medical attention that led to a brief delay in shooting to allow him time to recover,” before adding, “The production resumes shooting next week following John’s full recovery.”

This as-yet-untitled Cruise project is slated to hit the screens in 2026. The movie marks director Iñárritu’s first return to English-language film since The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, in 2016.

As the first feature to materialise out of Cruise’s new deal with Warner Bros, announced back in January, the actor will focus on creating both original and franchise-based movies for the production giant. Two of his previous biggest blockbuster roles – Mission: Impossible and Top Gun – had been helmed at Paramount since 2006.

It follows Cruise’s upcoming role for the final turn as the famous blockbuster spy, with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning set for release in May.

The new film seemingly depicts Cruise in a familiar outfit. As the strongest man in the world, he is set to prove himself a saviour to all mankind before self-inflicted destruction leads to a universal wipeout. Little else is known regarding the plot or, indeed, Goodman’s role, except that filming is taking place in the UK.

Alongside the pair, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed will fulfil the roles in the rest of the cast. Iñárritu co-wrote the script with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris, and Nicolás Giacobone. The director and main star will produce in a partnership with Mary Parent from the production company Legendary.

The movie is set to be released on October 2nd, 2026.
