Alejandro G Iñárritu claims AI “crisis” will “force us to go back to basics”
Alejandro G Iñárritu has claimed that the “crisis” of AI across the world, but particularly in the culture and movie industries, will eventually “force us to go back to basics”.
The acclaimed director was speaking in a new interview with The Guardian as part of his latest art exhibition Sueño Perro, celebrating the unseen footage from his 2000 debut film, Amores Perros.
Iñárritu claimed that the exhibition, in itself, has an effect on the human experience as “The physicality of it is a statement against AI.” However, when going on to discuss this threat more broadly, he said that the technology has “terrifying” ramifications.
“Now, with AI, we are arriving at a limit, where I think our senses will be so lacking in information that it will affect our ability to really learn from what we see and hear in a holistic, wholesome way,” he hypothesised.
The Birdman filmmaker added: “I think the crisis of AI will be the fact that we will start doubting everything we see on the screen. It will be so terrifying that it will force us to go back to basics, to just believe what we’ve really experienced with our bodies, that it really was a real thing.”
Iñárritu concluded his thoughts on AI by saying: “Maybe I’m trying to be positive here, but it’s so terrifying that I would like to find something that possibly can bring us to something good about it.”
It comes as the director is set to return to the big screen later this year with the release of his latest all-star blockbuster Digger, starring Tom Cruise, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed and Sophie Wilde.
The film, which was shot in the UK in 2024, has been kept strictly under wraps in terms of its plot and characters, but a teaser was released in December to share its highly-anticipated title announcement.
Digger is set to be released in cinemas on October 2nd, 2026.
