Aimee Lou Wood has no regrets over calling out ‘SNL’ teeth sketch: “It was breaking a pattern”

Aimee Lou Wood has stated that she has no regrets over calling out a sketch featured on Saturday Night Live earlier this year which made fun of her teeth and general appearance, as she said “it was breaking a pattern.”

The actor was speaking in a new interview with BBC News where she reflected on the incident, in which a set of large teeth were used in the sketch to parody her character in The White Lotus and make a joke about fluoride. At the time, she branded this as “mean and unfunny”.

The controversy sparked from the incident led to SNL issuing a rare apology to Wood, who has now said: “I don’t regret saying it because it was breaking a pattern, which is what I would usually do – what I did when I was younger and got bullied.”

Reflecting on her memories of seeing the sketch when it aired for the first time back in April this year, the actor recalled:  “I have a choice here to go in and be embarrassed about it and just say ‘I didn’t like that. It was mean'”.

Before adding, “No matter what chaos came from it, I’m still happy for me and my personal journey that I said something.”

Noting how her outlook on advocating for herself within the industry has changed over the years, the Sex Education star continued: “I’ve gone into meetings with directors that I’ve admired and burst into tears and not been able to say a word and I think that kind of urge is always to correct, to say ‘I’m so sorry that I just did something messy’ and actually you didn’t do anything wrong.”

Wood is now set to star in the new BBC romantic drama Film Club opposite Suranne Jones, which is set to be released on iPlayer from October 7th.
