Adrien Brody clarifies stance on AI: “Nothing can replace emotion”
Adrien Brody has shared his thoughts on Artificial Intelligence, stating confidently that AI will never “replace emotion”.
In conversation at the Red Sea Film Festival, the actor shared his performance techniques and insisted that he “never holds back” when on set.
Making a pertinent distinction, he added, “I have my own techniques to have the space to give it when needed. You have to hope you’re able to [perform well]. It’s not a science, you’re not a machine.”
After clarifying that resilience and commitment are the “responsibility of the actor,” he turned his attention towards the rise of Artificial Intelligence within the entertainment industry.
He began, “We are living at a time where there are immense shifts in every field. There are also shifts in the way we view content and what our children are exposed to as content.”
As per Variety, Brody continued, “There are new tools that are now available that will definitely enhance all our abilities to do great work, but there is nothing to replace emotion.”
Brody mused, “Even if you can fabricate it or whatever, we really should always cherish and support the creative process and the beauty of filmmaking, but that’s not to say that an evolution of that which is inevitable is bad. We have choices in what we choose as individuals to agree to ingest.”
These comments are notable, given that The Brutalist movie editor, Dávid Jancsó, revealed that he had used the AI software Respeecher to improve the accents of lead actors Brody and Felicity Jones. In the film, they play Jewish-Hungarian refugees who immigrate to the US following the Holocaust.
The revelation was met with much backlash after Brody won the Oscar for ‘Best Actor’ for his performance in the movie. At the time, he shared that the use of AI was more nuanced, though he “understood” why audiences might not warm to the idea of artificial editing.
