Adam Sandler pays subtle tribute to late co-star Cameron Boyce in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’

Adam Sandler has subtly paid tribute to his former co-star Cameron Boyce in his latest film, Happy Gilmore 2, six years after the actor tragically passed away.

Boyce, who died in 2019 aged 20 after suffering from a seizure in his sleep, had starred as Sandler’s son in the film Grown Ups in 2010, which he reprised for Grown Ups 2 in 2013.

The actor was best known for his roles in the Disney Channel hits Descendants and Jessie, which proved to be the source of inspiration for Sandler’s tribute in the new Netflix film.

At the beginning of Happy Gilmore 2, there is a brief shot of two people watching television as Sandler’s titular character is seen approaching a golf check-in desk. Looking closely, the show Jessie is being played, and Boyce quickly appears on screen.

This is not the first time Sandler has honoured Boyce in his films since his death, as a tribute also appeared in the credits for the film Hubie Halloween in 2020, which the latter had been slated to star in prior to his passing the year before.

Sandler posted a poignant tribute to Boyce when news of his untimely death emerged back in 2019, as he said the actor was: “Too young. Too sweet. Too funny. Just the nicest, most talented, and most decent kid around. Loved that kid. Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world. Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave to us.”

Happy Gilmore 2 stars many of the original cast members from the 1996 film, including Sandler, Julie Bowen, and Ben Stiller, as well as new additions in the form of Benny Safdie and Bad Bunny. It is now streaming on Netflix.
