The reason Adam Sandler wrote Bad Bunny into ‘Happy Gilmore 2’

Though Happy Gilmore 2 is full of crazy cameos, Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny‘s guest appearance is the most prominent in the new movie.

The new movie, directed by Kyle Newacheck of Sandler’s 2019 comedy with Jennifer Aniston, Murder Mystery, the sequel is a return to the universe that began 29 years ago. Sandler’s character opens the movie as a washed-up alcoholic, unable to afford his daughter’s expensive tuition at a Paris ballet academy.

He returns to the golf course to garner the funds, but finds new competitors on the field. While returning to the sport, he hires a busboy as his caddie, played by global music superstar Bad Bunny.

The singer long pursued an appearance in the sequel. Then, Sandler and Bad Bunny ran into each other at a Los Angeles Lakers game, after which Bad Bunny continued reaching out to the Uncut Gems star to find a way to collaborate.

At a similar time, Sandler saw Bad Bunny host Saturday Night Live earlier this year. “I saw him and I couldn’t believe how funny he was,” he said. Impressed, Sandler wrote a part for Bad Bunny into the movie.

“We said, ‘That’s a great idea,’ so that’s how it happened,” Sandler commented, referencing the creation of the new part. “He’s doing fine with or without me, but I’m happy he’s in this, man.”

The movie has been in high demand for almost three decades. Sandler commented on this, saying to ABC News earlier this week: “When I walk down the street a lotta times people will say, ‘you ever gonna do Happy Gilmore 2?’ And for 28 years, I was like, ‘What are you talking about? No.’ And then all of a sudden I was like, ‘Maybe.’”

The actor then explained the plot, musing that his character is “older. He’s a little thicker, as you can tell from one of these camera angles. But Happy Gilmore’s life isn’t perfect right now at the beginning of the movie. And he’s a family man, and he’s gettin’ back into the golf game.”

Happy Gilmore 2 is now showing on Netflix.
