The actor Armie Hammer, known for roles in Call Me By Your Name, Lone Ranger, The Social Network and more, has been accused of rape. The allegations have been made by a woman named Effie, who said in a statement, “I thought he was going to kill me.” The lawyers of the actor have denied the accusations, saying that the relationship in question was “completely consensual.”
It was revealed by Variety that Effie, whose last name has not been revealed for reasons of anonymity, had previously posted about the incident on Instagram. Appearing alongside her lawyer, Gloria Allred, the alleged victim read the following statement: “On April 24, 2017, Armie Hammer violently raped me for over four hours in Los Angeles. During which he repeatedly slapped my head against a wall bruising my face. He also committed other acts of violence against me to which I did not consent.”
In her statement, she detailed that she had met the actor when she was 20-years-old and entered a four-year relationship with him. “I fell in love with him instantly,” Effie explained, adding that she now sees “clear manipulation tactics” used against her.
“He would often test my devotion to him,” she later added, “He abused me mentally, emotionally and sexually.”
Armie Hammer has denied the allegations. His lawyer, Andrew Brettler, made a statement and revealed screenshots of messages sent between the actor and Effie.
The statement read: “Effie’s own correspondence with Mr. Hammer undermines and refutes her outrageous allegations. As recently as July 18, 2020, [she] sent graphic texts to Mr. Hammer telling him what she wanted him to do to her. Mr. Hammer responded making it clear that he did not want to maintain that type of relationship with her.”
The accompanying screenshot showed a response from Hammer, which read: “I am not going to be able to engage in you in that specific way right now. It never ends well. We can talk and be friends, but I can’t do that.”
Brettler’s statement continued: “It was never Mr. Hammer’s intention to embarrass or expose [Effie’s] fetishes or kinky sexual desires, but she has now escalated this matter to another level by hiring a civil lawyer to host a public press conference. With the truth on his side, Mr. Hammer welcomes the opportunity to set the record straight.
“From day one, Mr. Hammer has maintained that all of his interactions with [Effie] — and every other sexual partner of his for that matter — have been completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory. [Effie’s] attention seeking and ill-advised legal bid will only make it more difficult for real victims of sexual violence to get the justice they deserve.”
These latest developments follow last month’s news that the actor had been dropped by his agency and publicist last month after screenshots were revealed that allegedly showed Hammer sharing explicit content over private messages on social media. As of yet, no further statements have been made by either party.
