Back in 2018, Alanna McArdle made allegations of abuse against Hookworms frontman Matthew Johnson (MJ) on behalf of an unnamed woman through her personal blog post. Now, this blog post containing the allegations have since been withdrawn as has Johnson’s libel lawsuit filed in response.
McArdle is the former frontwoman for the band Joanna Gruesome and it is believed that she was making the allegations on behalf of an unnamed woman, referred to in legal proceedings as “L”. However, after three years of denial by Johnson, the blog post in question has been removed.
In a statement on Twitter made yesterday evening (May 26th) McArdle announced: “The litigation brought by Matt Johnson against Alanna and L/XYZ has been withdrawn.
“Alanna has now withdrawn the blog post from publication. Alanna bears Matthew no malice and hopes that he will do what is necessary to continue his music career. The blog post has been taken down. None of the parties will make any further comment on the case.”
At the time that the accusations were first made via McArdle’s blog, MJ responded by filing a lawsuit of his own for libel and malicious falsehood and these have also since been withdrawn.
The original abuse allegations were founded in a relationship that took place in 2016 during which the unnamed woman claimed that the frontman was abusive, and McArdle made a claim on behalf of the friend.
In the interim, Hookworms disbanded following the accusations, despite the singer fervently taking a stance of denial throughout. It is unclear what future awaits the band following this latest development.
