Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul considered playing Kurt Cobain in a Nirvana biopic

Aaron Paul, the actor best known for portraying Jesse Pinkman in the television series Breaking Bad, has revealed he once considered playing the role of Kurt Cobain.

Given the rise in musical biopics in recent years as the likes of Rocketman, Bohemian Rhapsody and more, Paul, who appeared in a Funny or Die spoof trailer for The ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Story, has often thought of exploring the idea more. “I thought it was genius,” he said while joking in a new interview with NME. “That he had this tortured love affair with Madonna – classic! You know, Al’s such a beautiful man – I’ve been a fan of his stuff for my whole life.”

After taking on Weird Al, Paul was discussing the rise if music biopic films when he revealed that he once considered the role of Kurt Cobain in a potential Nirvana film: “When I first moved to LA, I thought quite a bit about Kurt Cobain and what happened and I just love Nirvana,” he said.

The actor added: “‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ was one of the first records I bought with my own money, so I’ve thought that could be interesting [to play Cobain].”

Despite those ambitious hopes, Paul remains content with his current life and career: “It’s just about doing stuff that I continue to love. I mean, I’m madly in love,” he said when asked about what could be next for him. “I have a beautiful baby girl. I have a job on a series I love [Westworld] and it’s a beautiful thing. I started a mezcal company with one of my best friends [Cranston]. I’m in a very happy place.”
