Shane MacGowan and Sinéad O’Connor tribute concert announced
Following the death of two of Ireland’s biggest musicians, Sinéad O’Connor and Shane MacGowan, in 2023, details have been announced regarding a joint tribute concert in New York.
O’Connor passed away of natural causes at the age of 56 in July, whilst The Pogues frontman died of pneumonia at 65 on November 30th. Both were well-loved, with various public figures coming out to pay their respects to the musical icons.
Amongst the plethora of mourners, the New York City’s City Winery has confirmed that it will be holding a tribute concert in honour of the two musicians. This concert will be called ‘Sinéad & Shane at Carnegie Hall’ and is set to take place on March 20th.
General admission packages are available as of January 22nd. Additionally, a few different limited edition VIP Packages are also available. It promises to be a historic night of music, with a selection of their mutual friends set to pay homage to the duo’s legacy.
The full line-up is still yet to be revealed but set to perform so far are Dropkick Murphys, Cat Power, David Gray, Amanda Palmer, The Mountain Goats, Gordon Gano, Eugene Hütz, Glen Hansard, Bettye Lavette, Julia Cumming, the Resistance Revival Chorus and Kat Edmonson. More acts are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Some VIP packages are named after the musician’s biggest hits. For instance, the ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ category will allow fans to have a hands-on impact on the show, helping curators develop the setlist. Meanwhile, the ‘A Pair of Brown Eyes’ package gives the buyer a full five-course dinner with all participating artists.
Given the number of people who came out to pay their respects to both O’Connor and MacGowan after they passed, it can be expected that these tribute shows will be an evening to remember.
