‘A Minecraft Movie 2’ given same release date as ‘The Simpsons Movie 2’
After the huge box office success of A Minecraft Movie, Warner Bros has greenlit a sequel that will hit theatres in 2027.
The first Minecraft movie broke a plethora of records. In its first weekend alone, the movie exceeded expectations at the box office by grossing $162 million domestically in the United States. This represents the biggest opening weekend for a movie adaptation of a video game in history.
A part of the success was from the viral Chicken Jockey trend, which saw the largely young fanbase loudly cheer and throw popcorn when Jack Black’s character yelled “Chicken Jockey”. In response, cinemas introduced strict rules for screening attendees to combat the TikTok trend.
Black’s character was integral to the success of the movie. He also made UK chart history with the shortest song to become a UK Top 40 single. The song, ‘Steve’s Lava Chicken’, is just 34 seconds long.
At the end of the box office run, the movie grossed a staggering $957 million globally. It’s the second-highest-grossing Hollywood film in 2025, following on from Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, which surpassed the $1 billion mark.
Jared Hess will return to direct and co-write the screenplay for the sequel with Chris Galletta. The official social media account for the movie has teased the release via the punny promise that they are “building terrain”.
The slated release date of July 23rd, 2027, coincides with another huge release: The Simpsons Movie 2. Details of the new project are sparse: the official poster only depicts Homer grabbing a doughnut, alongside the tagline: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”
The first movie, directed by David Silverman and released in 2007, grossed an estimated $536 million at the global box office. The series has been running since 1987 and has enjoyed 37 seasons. It was recently renewed through to season 40, which will air in 2028/29.
