A collection of Drew Barrymore’s favourite songs
Music has played a significant role in Drew Barrymore’s life since her youth. From a young age, she was particularly drawn to The Go-Go’s, even emulating Belinda Carlisle as she grew up. While her musical tastes may have diversified over the years, her admiration for the pioneering LA band has remained steadfast.
Barrymore has been continually open about her favourite tunes, often describing tracks that deeply impacted her life and career. Speaking to Spin in 2010, she revealed some of her top artists, mentioning the likes of Crystal Castles, Band of Horses, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, “who are awesome live,” she said, adding, “The first time I heard ‘Home,’ it was like walking into a trippy world.”
However, as a featured guest on The Celebrity Playlist Podcast, Barrymore went into detail on several tracks that continue to move and inspire her. “Nothing means more to be than great music,” she explained, adding that she shares a lot in common with her fellow actor Elliot Page, who makes her feel like she’s “always being turned on to new things.”
During the episode, Barrymore presented her mix of eclectic music, calling Phoenix’s ‘1901’ “the song of the summer,” adding that “they nailed a real classic”. She also included a beautiful orchestral cover of Muse’s ‘Time Is Running Out’, claiming that she became drawn to it when she heard its beautiful strings.
“I put this song on because it’s one of those where you can’t help but start moving and grooving,” she said of ‘Walking on a Dream’ by Empire of the Sun. “It’s one of those, if you’re 20 or you’re 40, people dig it. I love a song that transcends age or is diverse enough to reach a big group of people and make them groove.”
Describing the song that most reaches the depths of her soul, she discusses the power of Bon Iver’s ‘Blood Bank’, adding: “When people say bone-chilling, or haunting, those words apply with that song.”
Meanwhile, the artist Barrymore labels “as geniuses” is Of Montreal because “they’re the greatest people” and “truly what going to a show is all about”. She also reiterates her appreciation for the Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros hit, predicting it to be a future classic, before rounding her list off strong with her favourite song of the summer, ‘Geraldine’ by Glasvegas.
