As a new lockdown sets in, the need for classic films is ever-growing. Google have stepped in to help you out and have provided 40 films to stream for free. There’s even an added extra challenge too — you have to find them.
There have been 40 films hidden within Google Maps with a plethora of British classics offered up as part of a “virtual movie hunt” launched by Google ahead of their Google Pixel presents Mobile Cinema campaign this month. The event is being held in collaboration with the British Film Institue, confirming that the movies on offer will be top-notch.
Titles on offer include Skyfall, Shaun of the Dead, Wallace & Gromit and, Phantom Thread—all big British hits and all with a special connection to a location. The full clues will be released later this month but we can’t help but feel Wensleydale may be a place to try and find one particular movie.
Participants will be able to search a map of the UK to find the clues and locations with the flicks then being made available to watch from any location. Users will also need to ensure they have a mobile device which connects to 5G in order to play along.
Dr Wing Yee Cheung, a senior lecturer in psychology and researcher at the University of Winchester, said of the choice of films designed to provoke nostalgia: “These movies are embedded with sensory memories of when we first watched them and whom we watched them with, which are key triggers of nostalgia.
“We can take the opportunity during the lockdown to create more positive memories with people in our social bubble for future recollection.”
Product manager for Google Pixel, Soniya Jobanputra, added: “As we enter another lockdown, we know that people are seeking familiarity; and find comfort in being able to reconnect to stories and characters that they know and love.
“‘Google Pixel presents Mobile Cinema’ will allow the nation to rediscover these films from our past and instantly transport themselves, whether they’re on the sofa, in the park, or moving between rooms – Pixel 5G will allow you to download and watch these films instantly.”
