15 dead and over 100 injured following collapse of nightclub roof in Dominican Republic
Following the collapse of the roof at the Jet Set nightclub in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, it’s confirmed that 15 have died and more than 100 people are injured.
The tragedy took place during the early hours of April 8th which led to an extensive rescue mission being carried out by local authorities who successfully transported over 100 people to medical facilities for treatment.
At this stage, the emergency services are still attempting to locate as many survivors under the rubble in a bid to rescue more lives and get them to hospital.
Singer Rubby Pérez, who was performing when the roof collapsed at the Jet Set nightclub, is among the many that have been left injured by the disaster.
Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Center of Emergency Operations, said in a statement: “We presume that many of them are still alive, and that is why the authorities here will not give up until not a single person remains under that rubble.”
Meanwhile, President Luis Abinader provided an update on the rescue mission, writing on X that the relevant authorities are “working tirelessly” to help those affected.
Abinader wrote: “We deeply regret the tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub. We have been following the incident minute by minute since it occurred.”
According to Billboard, he also arrived at the scene and hugged those who had friends and family under the rubble of the nightclub. While at the Jet Set, Abinader chose not to speak to reporters.
A significant crowd gathered by the venue following the disaster, with a local official instructing them via a megaphone: “You have to cooperate with authorities, please. We are removing people.”
At this stage, it is unclear what caused the roof to collapse.
