Watch trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’ new movie ‘Bugonia’, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons

Director Yorgos Lanthimos has shared a teaser trailer for his new movie, Bugonia, which stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

Bugonia is a remake of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet. It will follow two conspiracy-obsessed friends who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major corporation because they are convinced she’s an alien intent on destroying Earth.

The trailer uses the familiar allegory of a queen bee and her hive to exemplify the uneven power imbalance in the workplace under hierarchical capitalism. The very first shot is a group of bees buzzing around a piece of honey. “It all starts with something magnificent,” Plemons’s voice-over muses.

“The bees… they’re dying, ” he reveals, adding, “And that’s the way they planned it,” a first hint at Plemons’ fanatical mindset in the movie, gesturing to an unknown and unknowable “they.”

As always, Lanthimos adds an element of comedy, bridging closely onto hysteria, as a shot shows Plemons taking Stone’s character down in an effort to abduct her. The action is rendered far away, through the windows of a swimming pool out-house. All the while, Green Day’s ‘Basket Case’ plays.

Plemons, who worked with Stone and Lanthimos on Kinds of Kindness, leads the cast alongside newcomer Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone. This comes after the recent news that Plemons will take on Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character in Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

The movie made headlines in April due to a logistical nightmare. It was revealed that Greek authorities refused to give permission to film the new movie at the Acropolis. They requested that public access to the Acropolis be restricted for four days to allow time for filming and setting up. It is not clear from the trailer just why Lanthimos needed the Acropolis in the movie.

The film will open in select theatres on October 24th and expand nationwide on October 31st. This is earlier than the original release date by a week. October 31st will also mark the first day it is available in UK cinemas.
