Brighton heavy electro-rock band Yonaka have shared their latest single ‘Call Me a Saint’. It’s the band’s third single of the year after the releases of ‘Ordinary’ and ‘Seize the Power’.
The new song covers the mental health issues that can plague even the soundest of minds. No matter how solid your foundation may be, no one is immune from the self-defeating martyrdom of negative emotions and constant struggles for mental balance.
“I wanted to remove myself from the anxiety as if I was its keeper and it was a guest,” frontwoman Theresa Jarvis said of the track, “And I was a saint to this thing to let it keep its place in my mind. You constantly feel like you are on the run from something big and scary when you’re battling with mental health. It’s a long hard journey that you can never fully free yourself from, so you learn how to live with it.
“Being stronger than your worst feelings is certainly a cause worth celebrating, and Jarvis conjures up vicious put downs to counter her own negative thoughts. What comes out is a triumphant overcoming of self-doubt: “I’m a strong bitch baby/I’m designer.”
“Dealing with this every day is big fucking deal,” Jarvis adds, “And I want to praise anyone for making it to the next day and fighting through it. We are slaves to our brains and the strength it takes to keep it together and keep moving is another level.”
The band released their debut full length LP Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow back in 2019, and if the deluge of new singles is any indication, it seems as though the foursome are revving up for a possible new release on the horizon.
