Wunderhorse announce new album ‘Midas’

Wunderhorse have shared details of their second album, Midas, set for release on August 30th through Communion Records.

The upcoming LP was previewed last month with the title track, and now, the four-piece have unveiled second single, ‘July’, providing a further glimpse of what to expect on the highly-anticipated summer release.

While Wunderhorse’s debut album, Cub, didn’t initially gauge widespread attention upon release in 2022, through prominent tours with Fontaines D.C., Declan McKenna and festival appearances including Glastonbury, it has grown significantly in magnitude.

With Cub, Wunderhorse were viewed as a solo-project of Jacob Slater, however, due to the intense touring and collaborative focus of Midas, they are now a fully-fledged four piece with Harry Fowler, Jamie Staples and Peter Woodin official members of the group.

For Midas, Wunderhorse decamped to Minnesota’s Pachyderm Studio, which has previously housed albums such as Nirvana’s In Utero and PJ Harvey’s Rid Of Me. Craig Silvey was on hand to helm production, with his credits including work with The National, Florence and The Machine, The Horrors and Baxter Dury.

As is clear from ‘Midas’ and ‘July’, Wunderhorse aimed to capture an unpolished sound on the upcoming LP, with Slater remarking: “When we first went into the studio to make this record, the only thing we were sure about is how we wanted it to sound; very imperfect, very live, very raw; no frills.”

He continued: “We wanted it to sound like your face is pressed up against the amplifiers, like you’ve been locked inside the bass drum.”

The new album also sees Slater returning to Wunderhorse after releasing his solo debut, Pinky, I Love You, in 2023. In a three-star review of the offering, Far Out wrote: “Pinky, I Love You is an exploration of minimalism and nihilism and a step away from Slater’s sound in his endeavours with Wunderhorse and the Dead Pretties. With clear themes that chart life, love and death, and consistent instrumentation, it seems that Slater achieved what he set out to with the record.”

While there’s still no news regarding a headline tour to promote Midas, Wunderhorse are set to announce new dates in the near future. Furthermore, they will be appearing at various festivals across Europe this summer, as well as TRNSMT, Boardmasters and Reading and Leeds in the UK.
