Wolf Alice have announced the release of their latest single, ‘Smile’, by previewing a brief clip of the song on the band’s Twitter account.
From what we can hear in the ten-second snippet, it sounds like ‘Smile’ will be a fuzzy guitar rock stomper. Nothing makes me happier than a bassline mixed so loud that its distortion basically punches you in the face. That’s why I like Motorhead so much. Am I comparing the new Wolf Alice song to Motorhead? Is that the first time Wolf Alice and Motorhead have been used in the same sentence? Well, I guess there’s a first time for everything.
The good news is that the London group are stylistically diverse enough to make that connection without sounding like a complete knob. After all, the band has some hairy rock and roll tunes like ‘Yuk Foo’ and ‘You’re a Germ’ (great song titles) to balance out their shoegazier, dream poppier sound.
‘Smile’ will be the band’s second single from their upcoming third LP Blue Weekend after the first released single, the sweeping piano ballad ‘The Last Man on Earth’. Wolf Alice plan on taking Blue Weekend to a music hall near you at the start of 2022 with a tour of the U.K. and Ireland. By then, hopefully, we’ll all be able to celebrate the rock and roll splendour of ‘Smile’ in our favourite pubs, just as the good folks in the song’s preview video appear to be doing. A boy can dream.
