The upcoming biopic titled King Richard, which chronicles the early years of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams, is due to be released in November of this year.
What makes the premise of King Richard so interesting is that it focuses on the struggles of Richard Williams, the father of the two future legends who sacrificed a lot in order to help his girls fulfil their dreams.
Warner Bros. dedicates the project to “an undeterred father instrumental in raising two of the most extraordinarily gifted athletes of all time.”
It was announced back in 2019 that Will Smith would star as Richard, but the pandemic put a halt to the production process.
Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and with a script by Zach Baylin, King Richard will be available in theatres as well as the streaming service HBO Max. The film will be a relevant document of the socio-economic barriers that the Williams family had to cross on their journey to stardom.
In a 2003 interview, Serena Williams said: “He stayed up many nights watching films so he could teach us. He taught our mum, and then they taught us… Our father doesn’t get enough credit. He showed us how to serve, and we have the biggest serves in women’s tennis.”
Thankfully, interested viewers can finally catch a glimpse of Smith as Richard Williams in a brand new trailer that was recently released by Warner Bros.
