The only Will Smith movie scene that upset Jada Pinkett Smith
The world knows far more than it needs to about the marriage between Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, with the couple taking it upon themselves to share details on their long-standing union that nobody was really dying to hear in the first place.
When the A-lister strolled onto the stage at the Academy Award and slapped the taste right out of Chris Rock’s mouth in the most shocking moment in the ceremony’s history, she later revealed the thing that surprised her the most about it was that he’d referred to her as his wife, considering they’d been secretly separated for years at that point.
This came after many years of back-and-forth with the press about just how exactly their union operated, with the Smiths bestowing the word “entanglement” upon society for describing what sounded like an extramarital affair for all intents and purposes. They’ve got no intention of divorcing because they believe in the sanctity of marriage, but it would be fair to say they’ve got a pretty unique perspective on how to make it work.
With that in mind, it seems unusual – if not outright bizarre – that Jada bore serious umbrage with Will for doing his day job, filming a scene, and then coming home with the softest skin imaginable. In 2004’s blockbuster sci-fi I, Robot, the leading man’s Del Spooner strips down for a nude shower scene, during which he takes a well-earned break from trying to sell Converse and JVC products to the audience to take a shower. He’s the only person in the shot, but Jada’s concerns were raised nonetheless.
When he came home “with my skin all baby soft after performing nude,” Smith admitted of his wife that “she didn’t like it”. There’s no harm in moisturising; some might say it’s actively encouraged to try and outrun the inescapable sands of time for as long as possible, but he was still forced to clarify that none of his co-stars – especially female lead Bridget Moynahan – were in close proximity.
“I got away with the shower scene when I explained I wasn’t with Bridget, and the nudity was relevant to the movie,” he said. It’s hard to explain why Smith stripping down to the buff was relevant to a film where he plays a detective stopping sentient androids from mounting an uprising and overthrowing the human race, but Jada bought it, at least.
Nude scenes are often part and parcel of the acting business, but Smith made a mistake in not informing his spouse ahead of time that not only would he be baring all for the cameras, but he’d be stepping back through the door after a taxing day on set with skin that Jada presumably found to be so soft that it raised suspicions.
