‘Wicked: For Good’ smashes US box office record on first day

Wicked: For Good has soared into cinemas with unprecedented success after the opening day, performing hugely at the box office.

Wicked: For Good picks up the threads of the first film to follow the diverging paths of Elphaba, played by Cynthia Eviro, and Glinda, played by Ariana Grande.

Glinda is a public princess navigating a complex political landscape in light of Elphaba’s public demonisation. The follow-up ultimately leads to a confrontation that will reshape the City of Oz.

Per Deadline, the long-awaited second installment grossed an impressive $68.6 million across Friday and preview screenings from 4,115 locations in North America.

Therefore, Wicked: For Good is projected to earn a 3-day total of $151.5 million at the domestic US box office by the end of its opening weekend.

As a result, the film will make the biggest debut in history for a Broadway adaptation, beating its own record.

In comparison, the first instalment also enjoyed record-breaking success at the box office. It grossed $114 million, while the previous musical with the highest gross had been Into the Woods, which boasted a $3 1million opening weekend.

These numbers mean it is also expected to become the second-best opening weekend of 2025 so far, behind A Minecraft Movie, which brought in $162.7 million domestically.

Additionally, Wicked: For Good should fall behind a singular movie only for box office performance in Universal’s history. It will fall behind 2015’s Jurassic World, which grossed $208.8 million.

The press circuit for the new movie took a turn for the worse in Singapore, after a superfan approached Grande and grabbed at her on the red carpet.

Johnson Wen, a 26-year-old from Australia, pleaded guilty to being a public nuisance after the incident at the premiere on November 13th. He was subsequently sentenced to nine days in jail.
