What Tom Hardy hates about Hollywood: “We’re gonna eat another shit sandwich”

Tom Hardy isn’t one to obey the niceties of polite etiquette when he’s forced to deal with reporters. He’s been pretty vocal about hating interviews. This is reflected in the roles he chooses as an actor, where he usually plays aggressive, tough guys. Mobsters, MMA fighters and supervillains. The occasional cowboy or soldier. And he’s made a bit of a name for himself in sport jiujitsu, winning a couple of tournaments in the gi.

In his media obligations, Hardy isn’t known for being coy. He’s one among many Hollywood A-listers who dislike method actors and isn’t afraid to talk about it, saying that he’d like to ‘go against’ Michael Fassbender. Whether he means perform alongside him or throw him into outer space is left ambiguous.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Hardy wastes no time criticising the Hollywood system and doesn’t hold back. He said, “We’ll be OK, d’you know what I mean? We’re gonna eat another shit sandwich today. It’s just this is the one we want mustard on it, so just tell me which one we’re eating and get it out of the way,” he explains. “When I’m working for other people, and I’m not accountable or responsible, I’m not privy to the conversations of what shit sandwich is coming next—or if indeed there is one. ‘Cause a lot of people go, ‘Oh no, no, there’s no shit sandwiches here. Everything’s fine.’ But you can sense that there’s a shit sandwich in the wings. You just know it.”

And he laughs, saying. “I’m a professional liar. I know when you’re telling me a porky. You know why? Because I’ve spent 30-something years lying professionally.” which is an interesting way of looking at acting as a career. And it’s true for most jobs, you put on a face askew of what you’re really feeling. You smile at customers and clients to mask that you’d rather see them dead. It’s the same as an actor, except you

That’s a vivid and brutally honest metaphor. Hardy seems to be describing the inevitability of challenges in his work, acknowledging that every job or project comes with its own set of difficulties—what he calls “shit sandwiches.” The difference is that in their current position, they have some control over which “sandwich” they’re dealing with, rather than being blindsided by hidden problems when working for others.

The last part about being a “professional liar” suggests that whether you’re in a field like acting, sales, or public relations—it’s something where deception or performance is a core skill. It also hints at a deep awareness of when others are being dishonest, likely because they’ve had to master the art themselves.

That definitely sounds like something Tom Hardy would say—blunt, self-aware, and laced with dark humour. He has a reputation for being candid about the realities of his work, whether it’s acting, dealing with the industry, or just life in general. The “shit sandwich” metaphor feels like his way of saying, ‘Look, every job has its downsides, but at least in this case, I know what I’m dealing with‘. He’ll star in the upcoming Havoc and maybe do more jiujitsu tournaments, too.
