Watch U2 cover Crowded House classic ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ at The Sphere

During the first U2 show at The Sphere in 2024, the classic Irish rock band performed a cover of the 1986 pop hit ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ by Crowded House.

The band are scheduled to play the venue up until March this year after their initial 25-date run was extended by popular demand. This has, therefore, proved wildly lucrative for the band who earn an estimated $1.8million per concert.

The Sphere opened in September of 2023 and has consistently come close to selling out its 18,600 capacity. After the U2 run is over, the famed ska band Phish are set to take up a residency at the venue.

However, with the venue costing $2.3billion to construct, figures will have to be hugely profitable for the venue to be viable. This is part of the reason why talks of a second Sphere in London have recently been quelled.

While the latest Crowded House cover and the tribute to the band that Bono provided along with it is testimony to the intimate moments still possible on this ground-breaking stage, the band did admit to teething problems.

“They have to learn a new physicality,” the show’s director told Esquire. “I keep saying to them, ‘look up!’, because it’s an amphitheatre and a lot of the audience are up high. It’s much, much more contained.”
