The first trailer for The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel film to HBO’s The Sopranos, has landed at it gives us the first look at a young Tony Soprano trying to make his way up the mafia ladder.
HBO’s mega-hit The Sopranos will rightly go down in history as one of the finest television shows ever made. Using the dexterity of its leading man, James Gandolfini, as the titular Tony Soprano, a mob family boss trying to negotiate living in the modern world with traditional values, the show explored aspects of toxic masculinity, family values and moral conflict with the expressive brushstroke of an esteemed painter. Now, the show is getting the prequel it deserves.
The ending of The Sopranos has been the cause of conversation for many avid watchers of the show. Over a decade has passed since that infamous final scene, and the world got its last look at Tony Soprano, but now audiences will get a new view of the boss.
Played by Michael Gandolfini, the son of James, we join the young Tony to explore his relationship with Dickie Moltisanti, the father of Christopher Moltisanti from the TV show. It puts the young mob member under the spotlight as we get an up-close and personal look at how Soprano reached the top.
“When I was a kid, guys like me were brought up to follow codes,” narrates the older Tony Soprano over the images of his younger self battering another teen who seemed not to understand who he was trying to intimidate.
Produced in part by Sopranos creator David Chase, The Many Saints of Newark looks to accurately capture all of the characters we already know, with Vera Farmagia’s brief turn as Livia Soprano being a particular highlight, while also showing part of the story we always wanted to know.
The film will arrive in cinemas on October 1st and will stream via HBO Max for 31 days after. You can watch the first trailer for The Many Saints of Newark below.
