Watch Robert Pattinson star in trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Mickey 17’

Following the huge success of Parasite, director Bong Joon-ho is set to release his next movie, Mickey 17, on January 31st, 2025. In the first trailer, Robert Pattinson is showcased in the leading role as the titular character.

The film was originally slated for release in early 2024, but the impact of last year’s Hollywood strikes, as well as issues relating to an IMAX release window, has delayed Mickey 17 for almost a whole year. However, if the first trailer is anything to go by, the movie will surely be worth the extended wait for Joon-ho’s fans.

The movie sees Pattinson play a man who signs up to be expendable. He gets sent on missions in space, namely to colonise an ice planet named Niflheim, and every time he dies, another version of himself is created, leading to much confusion, chaos, and comedy. It’s based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, published in 2022.

Alongside Pattinson, the film also features a stacked cast, including Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, Naomi Ackie, and Steven Yeun. It is Joon-ho’s first English-language feature since 2017’s Okja, which starred Tilda Swinton and Paul Dano. In between these two films, Bong released the Korean-language Parasite, which took the world by storm.

The darkly humorous movie, which expertly explored class, attracted significant acclaim and won four Oscars, including ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best International Feature Film’. Bong also took home the award for ‘Best Director’.

Due to the reputation amassed by Joon-ho, Mickey 17 has been highly anticipated by fans. Judging by the trailer, it seems as though Pattinson’s character will be going through a lot after signing himself away to be ‘disposable’.

Yet, there are plenty of humorous moments sandwiched between thrills in the director’s usual style, such as a scene where one version of Mickey wakes up to find another version next to him, resulting in a comical scream.

Mickey 17 has been written and directed by Bong, who also produced it through his company Offscreen. Kate Street Productions and Plan B have also contributed to production.

This is Pattinson’s first on-screen appearance since The Batman, in which he played the titular character, although he did lend his voice to the English dub of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron in 2023. Before that, he starred in Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse, the Netflix Original movie The Devil All The Time, and Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.
