Watch Magdalena Bay debut new song ‘Second Sleep’ at Lollapalooza Aftershow

Rising pop duo Magdalena Bay have debuted a new song at a Lollapalooza after show, less than a year after their 2024 Imaginal Disk was birthed into the world.

The alternative pop duo were formed in 2016 in Miami, and are currently based in Los Angeles. The band consists of singer and songwriter Mica Tennebaum and producer and songwriter Matthew Lewin. They are known for their wild visual imagery and cinematic, shimmery pop.

Fans have recently speculated that the duo might soon release a deluxe edition of their 2024 album, Imaginal Disk. The pair have previously done this for their 2022 album Mercurial World, the deluxe edition of which included a total of 28 songs.

During Lollapalooza Afters in Chicago, Tenebaum opened the tune with her whimsical, sweet vocals soaring as she gracefully played the guitar. Behind her, a cityscape ran past, overlooked by a sun with a nonchalant face, blinking intermittently. Tenebaum eventually moved over to the keys to finish the song with a laugh.

The debut was the penultimate song of their set, heading the encore which came after the softer ‘Angel on a Satellite’ and ‘The Ballad of Matt & Mica’, and preceded their closer ‘The Beginning’ which commands, “If you’re feeling low, sit back, enjoy the show.”

On a three and a half star review of their latest studio album, Far Out wrote, “As if proof of their tight creative partnership and near life-long understanding of each other’s influences, interests and inner worlds, Imaginal Disk feels like a perfect product of Magdalena Bay’s relationship, where that closeness allows them to manage fun, experimentation, outright joy and deeper intrigue in a careful balance.”

The new single has that ever-present futuristic glaze that is so recognisable to their sound. Speaking about her influences on the latest album, Tenebaum told Paper magazine, “I was really interested in this idea of the self on a personal level, and then it gave way to a more sci-fi story to overlay atop those more personal ideas. We obviously love sci-fi. It’s something that influences us and lives in all of our art.”
