Watch Dave Grohl join his daughter Violet to cover Nirvana
Between touring with Foo Fighters, frontman Dave Grohl accompanied his daughter Violet to play drums on a song by his old band, Nirvana.
Grohl’s daughter had been performing with David Bowie’s former pianist Mike Garson at a show at LA’s Sun Rose club. Up until Grohl’s appearance, Violet had been playing through some of the greatest hits by ‘The Starman’. After her performance, Grohl hopped on stage behind the kit to perform the Nirvana song ‘Heart Shaped Box’.
Among the David Bowie covers, she included a version of his hit ‘The Man Who Sold the World’ from the album of the same name. The song had become a fixture in Nirvana’s setlist in their final months, becoming a standout in their unplugged episode for MTV.
Outside of the covers, Violet also duetted with her father on the song ‘Show Me How’ from the band’s latest full-length album But Here We Are. Since her appearance, Violet has also been out on tour with her father, usually duetting on the song whenever it comes up on the setlist.
The band’s latest marked the first time that they had put out a record since the tragic passing of Taylor Hawkins. To commemorate the fallen drummer, Violet also sang at the various tribute shows in Hawkins’ memory, performing songs like The Zutons’ ‘Valerie’ and Jeff Buckley’s ‘Last Goodbye’.
When discussing her performance at the event, the compere DJ Matt Pinfield said, “[Violet] was the featured vocalist all night with David Bowie keyboard legend Mike Garson and his band. She did stellar versions of all the Bowie songs. Her range is incredible”.
In the review of their latest album Far Out said: “While it’s hard to call But Here We Are a classic Foo Fighters record, it’s definitely a record that should garner respect later as the band comb through their back pages to celebrate their own story of survival”.
