Watch Cat Power cover Bob Dylan’s ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ on ‘The Tonight Show’
Following the release of her latest album, Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert, a recreation of one of Bob Dylan’s most iconic performances, Cat Power has performed ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The singer, real name Chan Marshall, decided to pay homage to the folk legend by playing the memorable set track-for-track on the recently released album. Dylan’s concert was mislabelled as taking place at the Royal Albert Hall in bootleg recordings; it was actually performed at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall.
The performance saw Dylan switch to electric instruments midway through the set, much to the dismay of the audience. In retaliation, the crowd heckled Dylan, even calling him Judas. However, the recording has now become legendary, with Power paying tribute with her own rendition of the performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall in November 2022.
In a review of the new record, Far Out wrote: “From front to back, this recreation is coming from the perspective of people who strongly revere Dylan’s words and want to celebrate what he gave to the world. Compared to covers albums where artists use their idols as a musical mask over their own faces, Cat Power documents what it must have been like in those hallowed halls in 1966 when Dylan played there for the first time.”
She told The Guardian ahead of her performance, “I’m not being Bob, not at all. I don’t know how to describe it – I’m just recreating it, that’s all. But not making it mine. I had the inkling that I should protect that period of time and him making that crossover. It’s like this precipice of time that changed music forever.”
Now, the recording has been released, making it Power’s first live album. In celebration, she played ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on November 13th.
