Watch Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone in ‘The Wedding Banquet’ trailer

The trailer for the upcoming movie The Wedding Banquet, starring Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone, has been released.

Directed by Andrew Ahn, the film is a remake of the classic 1993 LGBTQ+ rom-com originally helmed by Ang Lee. It follows four friends – Yang and Gladstone, alongside Kelly Marie Tran and Han Gi-Chan – as they struggle to come to terms with and conquer the problems of adulthood.

As the trailer sees the characters grappling with the issues of IVF treatment, relationship strains, immigration, and family perceptions, this upcoming modern adaptation will bring its timely subject matter sharply into focus, while also indulging in a strong dose of its comedic elements.

The Wedding Banquet premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, during which Oscar-nominated actor Gladstone said she was proud to insert a huge aspect of her personal identity into her character, Lee, as she wanted to honour the Indigenous community within the film’s setting of Seattle.

She explained to IndieWire that Lee is from Seattle’s Duwamish tribe, who are still fighting to be federally recognised. Gladstone explained why this representation was important, noting: “Art is transcendence, it’s how we shape societies, it was important for me to make my character Duwamish. A Duwamish person on Duwamish land has not really been seen in cinema before.”

The film has been co-written by James Schamus, who was also behind the original 1993 version by director Lee, which picked up a slew of awards recognition at the time of its release, including nominations at the Oscars and Golden Globes for ‘Best Foreign Language Film’.

The Wedding Banquet will be released in the US on April 18th.
