Vistas, Scotland’s peppiest group of alt-rockers, have shared their first new single in a year, ‘Start Again.’
The band released their debut album, Everything Changes in the End, last year. It’s full of full-throttle jams with huge pop-adjacent hooks and monster choruses. It’s a great foundation to build off of, and it sounds like the band is going right back to the well on their newest release.
“‘Start Again’ was one of the first songs I wrote after I took a bit of time off from writing,” says excellently named Vistas lead singer Prentice Robertson. “It is essentially a song about having writer’s block and the feelings that come along with worrying where your next idea is going to come from. I think getting this song down really helped to unstick any writer’s block I was having and oiled the wheels of everything that would follow on from this track.”
It sounds like the magic formula for breaking writer’s block was fairly simple: don’t change the magic formula that was already in place. If Everything Changes in the End was, to its core, a sing-songy, fist pumping, ecstatic celebration of being a young, stupid person with their whole life ahead of them, why would you mess with that?
You can hear that same goofy burned out energy in lines like, “We go again, is every line a test?/My mind won’t let me rest till I’ve guessed and second guessed.” I have to admit though, I’m a fan of the lines “I’m uninspired/ Can’t fake a surprise/God loves a trier.” It’s a little more existential than what the band usually throws out.
