Scotland’s liveliest group of alt rockers Vistas have released their latest single, ‘Dayglow’, from their upcoming second studio album What Were You Hoping To Find?
“I wrote ‘Dayglow’ right at the start of lockdown and it was intended to be an optimistic song,” lead singer Prentice Robertson says. “At that time, I would often daydream about things I wanted to do when lockdown ended and I found that was a good way for me to deal with what was happening. It made me miss those lost nights with my favourite people but also made me optimistic that they would happen again and that’s what helped pull me through.”
Part of my brain initially forgot where the good boys in Vistas were from, but before I even needed to look it up, Robertson’s signature accent kicked in after a wash of jubilant synths and backing vocals. I’m always a big fan of being able to tell exactly where someone is from because they refuse to conform to the nebulous transatlantic accent that a number of US and UK singers fall into.
I’m also a big fan of rock bands not being afraid to embrace the world of pop music. “Pop”, as it turns out, is not actually a dirty word. The best pop songs are songs that can connect with any music listeners of any specific taste or genre inclination.
Earworms, catchy melodies, bright hooks, and goofy fun should not be looked at with an untrustworthy eye, but rather these elements should be embraced by more bands. Take Vistas as your trusty guide on how to stay cool and indie while bursting at the seams with wonderful pop arrangements.
