Vinnie Paul, the co-founder and drummer of metal band Pantera, has died aged 54.
The band, who he formed in 1981 alongside his brother Dimebag Darrell and vocalist Rex Brown, went on to release nine studio albums before they eventually split in 2003. Coming out of Texas, the band were quickly branded a heavy metal band. However, Pantera’s pioneering style always pushed them towards groove metal. thrash metal and, at times, glam metal.
An announcement was made on Pantera’s official Facebook page on Friday night that Paul had passed away.
“Vincent Paul Abbott aka Vinnie Paul has passed away,” the statement reads. “Paul is best known for his work as the drummer in the bands Pantera and Hellyeah.
“No further details are available at this time. The family requests you please respect their privacy during this time.”
