Villagers announce tour, album, and new song 'The First Day'

What a day to be a fan of Villagers. The Irish indie-folk band have announced a new album, Fever Dreams, and a slew of tour dates around the U.K. for autumn 2021. On top of all that, the group also released a new song, ‘The First Day’. Don’t get us all worked up like this, boys, we can’t handle all of it at once.

“I had an urge to write something that was as generous to the listener as it was to myself,” frontman Conor O’Brien says. “Sometimes the most delirious states can produce the most ecstatic, euphoric and escapist dreams.”

‘The First Day’ is an appropriately tranquil track, stuffed to the brim with twinkling bells, fanfare brass and horns, idyllic harmonies that float over the arrangement. Any track that has glockenspiel is a banger. I don’t make the rules, I just dutifully follow them.

Villagers have carved out a unique niche within indie rock since their first release all the way back in 2009. Gentle instrumentation and haunting melodies are characteristic of almost all of the band’s work, and they shine as the setting gets more intimate. The best illustration of this is their Spotify Sessions, which contains some fantastically intricate acoustic work. The good news is that none of that delicacy and beauty is lost when the band plugs in, making them a necessary live act to check out.
